The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada to Honour Deepa Mehta with Inaugural Equity in Entertainment Award

The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada is proud to announce that film writer and director Deepa Mehta will receive the Equity in Entertainment Award at this year’s inaugural Canadian event on May 30 in Toronto.

The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada’s Equity in Entertainment Award will recognize Canadian creators and leaders in the entertainment industry who are working to reflect and amplify the voices and stories of underrepresented communities.

Being awarded for the first time in Canada, the Award’s namesake was created in 2016 by The Hollywood Reporter as part of its Women in Entertainment gala in Los Angeles, with past honourees including Kerry Washington, Issa Rae, and Amy Pascal.

Deepa Mehta is an Oscar-nominated Canadian film writer and director whose work is internationally renowned. Her award-winning films have been sold and celebrated around the globe, including the Elemental Trilogy: Fire, Earth, and the Best Foreign Language Oscar nominee, Water.

Mehta’s latest film I am Sirat premiered at TIFF 2023 about a transgender woman who must act as her mother’s son when at home in New Delhi but can be the woman she really is with her friends and at work with the Government of India.

Mehta’s provocative films and innovative career have inspired audiences and filmmakers alike in Canada and beyond. Mehta has paved new roads for more authentic South Asian and LGBTQ+ representation on screen, using her films to explore the impacts of political and cultural unrest on the lives of “everyday” citizens.

In addition to her many films, Mehta’s television projects include directing the pilot and second episode for the Netflix Original series, Leila; the pilot episodes of Little America’s two seasons for Apple TV; as well as the episode Bear Down for Showtime’s acclaimed series Yellowjackets.

Mehta is currently working on a feature film based on the book and script Forgiveness by Mark Sakamoto, as well as the feature film Troilokya set to film in India.
